Chess game Bauhaus
In September 1924, the Bauhaus chess set was produced for the first time and has since become a design icon.
The concept behind the unusual shapes of the game pieces was designed by Josef Hartwig. He questioned the traditional shapes and created simple forms based only on the function of the figures. These shapes are based on the basic geometric shapes of sphere and cube.
By designing and combining these two shapes and their size, the individual game pieces are created in a very logical way.
The game pieces are made of maple wood and either stained black or clear lacquered. The game board is made of maple veneer and partially printed in black.
A high quality beech wood cassette with sliding lids is included to store the game pieces.
